Itinerary of the first Discalced Carmelite mission in the kingdoms of Congo and Angola (1584-1587)

After two unsuccessful attempts, the third mission of the Discalced Carmelite Order to the kingdoms of Congo and Angola, albeit a bumpy one, succeeded in establishing a first convent, dedicated to the Conception of Mary, in São Salvador do Congo. Despite the favourable stances of the local authorities, the bishop of the diocese of São Tomé, the royal power and the papacy, the opposition of the Portuguese agents against the Spanish missionaries and the closed-mindedness of the Spanish Carmelites who opposed the missionary work of the Order meant that this colonial missionary adventure was short-lived.
