Pope Paul V's bull of 10 September 1614 authorised the administration of viaticum to Christians who fell ill in the galleys. The first time the ceremony took place on a ship, it had to be carried out with great solemnity, with salvos and the accompaniment of minstrels and trumpets from the galleys that had them. It was first performed in Barcelona on 28 December 1614.
