Pro pluvia rituals in Barcelona (1687)

Outward (blue) and return (red) routes from Barcelona Cathedral to the Convent of Santa Madrona followed in pro pluvia processions to collect and return the relics of Santa Madrona. Parts of the route that are shared by both outward and return routes are shown in purple, and dotted lines are used to mark sections that are not given in the sources and are therefore speculated. The return route is not given in the Manual de Cabiscol description of the procession held in 1687 or in the Registre d'Ordinacions. This part of the route has been reconstructed based upon the itinerary given in the same Manual del Cabiscol for the processions to the Convent of Santa Madrona on the saint's feast day. It is almost certain that the 1687 processions followed this same route, given that this is consistently noted as the return route in announcements of the Registre d'Ordinacions from 1513 onwards. From the mid-seventeenth century, it is common to see expressions in the Registre such as 'per los carrers acostumats' ('through the usual streets') in place of the detailed itinerary of the procession.
