Itinerary of the Baptism, Execution and Burial of a Moorish Slave in Seville (1625)

On 3 October 1625, Juan Francisco, ‘a slave Moor’ who had murdered one of his master's squires, was baptised, executed and buried. The civil and religious powers joined forces to make a spectacle of this event in order to reinforce the image of power, hierarchy and the values of obedience and submission to the established order.
