Mapping the incorporation of minstrels' chapels into the Spanish sacred institutions

On 9 July 1526, the Seville cathedral chapter agreed to hire a stable group of five wind players to solemnise the main feasts of its liturgical calendar. This was the starting point of a phenomenon that would gradually spread throughout the mainland and overseas territories of the Hispanic crowns throughout the 16th century, becoming a musical hallmark of the Hispanic sacred institutions and having a notable impact on the performance of the entire repertoire in use. The aim of this project is to map this process in order to establish its chronology and the main sources of its irradiation. At the same time, it will allow us to analyse the similarities and differences in the actions carried out by the chapters, their concerns and debates, which sometimes lasted for long periods of time and led to discontinuous temporary contracts. Finally, it will enable us to get to know who the members of these instrumental ensembles were, their origins and family relationships, the instruments and the repertoire they played, their involvement in liturgical and devotional ceremonies, their conflicts with the institutions that hired them and the places where they performed inside and outside those institutions. We have taken as our starting point the work developed and published in the article Ministriles y extravagantes en la celebración religiosa (2004) and revised and updated the information with the bibliography published since that date. The user can access the contents of this project through the "Cartographic Projects" tab in the main menu or by using the search engine offered by the Historical Soundscapes platform. We have added the generic tag "mapping incorporation wind player ensembles" to all the articles included, which has been created as a "type of event" for easy identification.
